“Those whose
playgrounds are lively their hospitals will be desolate”, as common adage used
whenever a reference is made to sports and its possible benefits for humans.
But will it not sound odd especially when it comes to the games played between
the once one and now the two countries: Indian and Pakistan. No doubts least
efforts are made on political, militarily, diplomatic and on public basis to
allay the tension between the countries, even if there seems such initiative it
is intentionally foiled by some interested sections at both sides of the
borders. In such a sorry state of affairs sports alone can be relied upon to
show some light at the end of the tunnel. But does it do so? The answer
certainly is a resounding no, and even results into further acrimony and
bitterness.
Each time when the two teams are to appear in the
playground, especially the cricket, the excitement, thrill, sensation and media
hypes are all around. The supporters are so emotionally charged that they take
it something more than a simple game. The victory and loss are deemed something
more than that of a game. They lose sense how to neither celebrate their
victory nor have to the stomach to tackle with the frustration of loss. In
either case they fail to observe the civilized and polite canons which human
beings are supposed to conform to.
The attitude at both sides of the borders speaks
volumes of the aged long deep rooted problems prevalent in the countries. It
brings forth the sheer dearth of literacy, reasoning power, civility and politeness
and sophistication. Whereas it highlights the prevailing ignorance and the extreme
to which the people are led by emotions rather than cool reasoning. Each time
in the post match scenario, a heated discussion takes place which lays emphasis
on the ways to improve the losing team,
chalk out a better strategy, bring more improvement to the team and ensure a
victory next time. But attention is never paid to such fault lines prevailing
in the social fabrics of both the countries.
The attitude reflects that how the people can be
lead by emotions and taken advantages of them. They can go to any height when
emotionally charged. Attacks on the properties of the likeminded people of the
rival team, damaging national and personal assets and even taking lives are
among the common reactions witnessed each time when the two teams are going to
have a match.
The reactions transcend sanity, boundaries of
civility and politeness by all canons. In the post match scenario efforts are
always seen to improve the performance for the next round, but no such efforts,
not even mention is made of such emotional reactions by the public. It’s high
time to pay due heed to such attitude of the public and pay more heed to
cultivating sanity, tolerance, reasoning based and calculated approach than to
improving the skills of the players for the next rounds of such shows. There is
a dire need introducing the very sportsman’s spirit than the skills of the
sports in both the countries.
