Who is Gul Khan?

The term Gul Khan has gained more currency these days, and is widely used in the social media to mock a segment of Pakhtoon society. The term had been in vogue to mockingly denote the whole Pakhtoon lot by the non-pakhtoon sections, especially the Punjabis, of Pakistani society. However, the term resurfaced with new connotation and denotation, this time by the pakhtoons themselves, especially the pakhtoon nationalists’ figures. How the word came to be used by the pakhtoon nationalists who earlier took exception to such a stereotyping.

The erudite and intellectuals of the pakhtoon society believe that they have been lacking proper presentation in the national affairs of the federation of Pakistan, and deprived of their due share in national resources. They believe that the Punjab, as the largest province of the federation by population, consumes more resources, occupies key slots in the states ‘services, and reserves both the material and non-materials means to mould the national discourse in its own favor. This domineering disposition, they believe is an encroachment on the rights of the smaller provinces especially the Pakhtoonkhwa. Harboring this resentment in mind they are reluctant to accept such a setup which promotes and lends countenance to the said domineering disposition.

Whereas on the other hand, there are people from the pakhtoon population itself who disregard such a marginalization in the system and conform to the setup without any grievances. They don’t feel unevenness in the system and become part of the discourse to promote the status-quo. This section of the pakhtoon society is termed by the nationalists as myopic, fledging and lacking in the political insight and acumen. The nationalist termed them as Gul Khan, synonymous with duffer and silly as believe by the non-pakhtoons sections of the Pakistani society.
