Caste, class, color, creed and the geographical boundaries
are among the major impediments which distance human beings form one another
and keep them confined into certain watertight compartments. The realization of
creed/religion proves a hardest obstacle in the way being human, once viewed
from the prism of bigotry aided by misinterpretation. In order to be human on
the planet one must transcend these barriers and reach out his fellow beings. Thomas
Paine rightly says, “I am a citizen of the world and my religion is to do good”.
The religion of humanity is certainly the greatest of religions.
The social order, power structure, fallacious sense of
superiority, status consciousness, religious bigotry, and geographical jingoism
have marred our sense of being humans. it is therefore that the known social
scientist Jacques Rosseau says, ”man is born free but he is everywhere in
chains, God made all the things good, but man meddles with them and they become
evil”. Man would have been considerate and much sympathizer, had these factors
not spoiled his adventure of being human. The test now is the courage and
mettle to do away with these impediments and ferret out the real rationale
behind the very existence of human beings, the job is indeed very challenging
as only few can resist the temptation of inner self.
Those who transcend the barriers really make indelible marks
and their footprints are traced for longer in the days to come. There are
numerous instances of pure philanthropists in the recorded history who have
served humanity without any overt and covert personal objectives. We may find
noted celebrities, public figures and social icons who have devoted their lives
to the cause of serving humanity without any racial or religious
considerations. What is required of all humans is a general but fundamental
change in their mindset.
Humanity needs to be considered as a religion itself, far
better than the social constructs and the concepts of religions which lay emphasis on mere worshipping ,
trying to establish a direct link between an individual and the supreme entity,
with exclusion to paying any heed to the his fellow beings and creatures of the
supreme entity. The approach of seeking salvation through a direct contact with
the supreme entity and displaying a callous and indifferent attitude to his
creature may be reckoned fallacious.
Serving humanity does not need huge piles of wealth, rather a
strong will and determination. Perhaps many would keep themselves away from the
venture simply on the ground that they lack the necessary wherewithal for doing
so, but in fact there are thousand other who serve the cause without having any
huge material possession, but equipped only with will and the available
resources, no matter how much meager they may be.
The celebrated Pakistani philanthropist, Abdusatar Edhi, was
not a millionaire, but his iron will and sincere efforts helped him achieve the
pinnacles of glory in the field of volunteer social services. His modus
operandi reflected the creed of humanity as a religion itself, he served the
cause without any ethnic, religious, or racial considerations, and he was
slammed as well for the said approach from certain conservatives camps, but no
amount of criticism thwarted his ambition. There can be noted a deep
convergence of views between Henry Dunant and Abdussatar Edhi in their approach to the serving the
cause of humanity, and taking it as religion itself.
